Diogo Barros Pires,

a Lisbon based artist, working with different media. Studied economics in Lisbon, Barros Pires took photography classes in Prague. He pursued different career paths in Germany, the U.S., Spain, Mozambique and Turkey, at the same time he collaborated with international artists and designers and participated in group exhibitions.

Memory-driven, multi-disciplinary artist, blending personal and collective narratives.

In 2016, he became a student of Ar.Co, Advanced Course in Visual Arts and developed several individual projects. As an opportunity to join different aspects of his professional experiences, he collaborated with Studio Astolfi as the manager and creative director between 2017-2019. In 2020-2021, he co-created and produced visual narratives for De La Espada. Since ….. he is running Safra Lx, a multi-disciplinary working and event space, where he also has his atelier as an artist.

His art is driven by his personal memory. At the same time, he uses collectively inherited images from history, literature, cinema, as well as social media in spontaneous relationships with the transitory moments of his everyday life.

As a result, his paintings are not only personal but also very universal. Random moments are handpicked from both his and collective memories and transformed into some strange characters with his unique plasticity. His subjects, real or fictional meet random everyday objects in a savage party or are caught in a moment of vanity, like when posing in front of the mirror, As a result, his paintings are not only personal but also very universal.

Random moments are handpicked from both his and collective memories and transformed into some strange characters with his unique plasticity. His subjects, real or fictional meet random everyday objects in a savage party or are caught in a moment of vanity, like when posing in front of the mirror, assuming nobody is watching. Or a selfie, only to delete later. Sometimes the figures are dissolving in the many details of space, in the patterns of the wallpaper or pavement. Disproportionate body parts are exceeding the limits of the canvas or on the contrary, they disappear before reaching those limits. What has been funny once, dissolves in the abyss of non-existent eyeballs and what is heavy becomes light and easy in the incompleteness of a simple gesture. What might be ordinary to a level of boring, turns into a flamboyant spectacle. The distance of banal to magical in his works create a strong tension.

Pires’ works are dominated by painting format; though pieces of his collection vary from crayon sketches to oil paintings, from collages and photography to spatial elements. His works in large format create a strong first impression and a remaining presence. The variety of his interests are scattered in a wide range of art and design, the result is incorporating fashion with space, turning painting into performance.

WE BELIEVE GETTING LOST IN THE DETAILS IS A WONDERFUL PLACE TO BE FOUND.
